Year 2 final project

For this project, I am going to be doing sports graphics and brand endorsements. The pieces I will be creating will mainly revolve around football and specific players and/or clubs. I am pursuing sports and exploring how graphics can be involved in sports communities. One of my main motivations for this project is my love for sports and some of the creations I see on social media. My favourite sport is football and I follow a lot of accounts that post smaller creators work after football games or after big events. I find these interesting and something I would like to personally pursue. Some of my main ideas for this final project consist of advertisement campaigns for sports companies (Nike, Adidas, New Balance). I would like to create advertisements for products like a new pair of boots or a new football shirt as part of this project. I would also like to create graphics suitable for players social medias. I think for the most part of this project I will be mainly doing illustrations. I like the style of illustrations for football designs as you can be very abstract and most people that see it will still know who it is because all the football players are very well known within the community. The research I will conduct for this project will mainly consist of getting inspiration from other creators and looking at advertisement campaigns launched by big companies to identify effective marketing strategies to shine the light on the product and to sell the product to the public. I will also look into what graphics get posted and which ones get the most traction and the most recognition from big sports pages as well as communities.

Research

To start of my research, I am going to be looking into what makes a good advertisement and how to grip a viewers attention while also giving the consumer a good understanding and liking to the product.

Firstly, I had a look on: https://marketingepic.com/what-makes-good-ad/

Some of the main points from this site suggest that a great and effective advertisement is one that the target audience can emotionally connect with and once achieved the consumer is won over and has an interest in your product. This could be really helpful for my advertisements as a lot of the football fan base have an immense passion for the sport and can tend to show emotion through the sport. An advertisement could show something to trigger that inner passion and utilise their love for the sport and their club/country’s team. Also, if a mutually respected player is shown on an advertisement that is well known and nobody really hates them people would back the products no matter if they are from a rival fan base.

Another point that this site states is that the quality of the advertisements are very important and it is essential to try and stick to the saying of ‘a picture is worth a thousand words’. If the viewer sees a low quality advertisement that doesn’t engage their interest then they won’t be gripped from the first look.

One of the biggest points stated on here is that the bulk writing has to be short and sweet yet has to also be precise and compelling. Nobody wants to read forever and they want to know what they’re getting without having to go out of their way for the information. It is important to avoid information that isn’t necessary and contributes to the generic point of the advert and aids the products audience view.

Another Site I looked at was https://www.postplanner.com/blog/simple-ways-to-design-engaging-social-media-graphics

I looked at this site to research how to make an effective graphic that is going to engage the target audience and how to interest them from the first glance.

This site expresses how important having a general plan for the project is. Simple things like reflecting on experience and allocating amounts of time can increase productivity and enhance overall results.

It also explains how important establishing a few things to stick to throughout the whole project can be. Whether that’s sticking to basic brand logos or certain colour-ways , keeping consistency through your project is important and will help keep on track and stay in line with your project. Certain colours also make the consumers feel certain ways. For example, some colours can give a feeling of freshness and trustworthiness. A big thing to do with colour is contrast, this makes the graphic eye-catching and instantly grasp the viewers attention.

Artist Research

Pawel Nolbert

The first artist I am looking at is a graphic designer who works Nike Inc. called Pawel Nolbert. He is most well known for his multi coloured brush strokes and unique style he applies in different ways

With each piece he makes, Pawel keeps a consistent style within them and maintains a certain colour palette to try and keep things creative yet simple whilst achieving an impressive outcome.

This is one of my favourite pieces from Pawel, it incorporates Pawel unique brushstrokes whilst maintaining a simple style throughout the piece. This piece represents the American football team NY Giants Jersey in a creative manor and has an abstract feel to the whole piece. This combines a simple piece with Pawel’s abstract and unique style which combine well and produce an amazing outcome.

This is a prime example of how effective Pawel’s work can be in advertisements. This way of advertising centres the product and makes you focus on the product whilst also been creative and unique to Pawel. This is one of many of his pieces that stand out in such a way. .

Nathan Shinkle

Shinkle works for Adidas as a Senior Design Manager and has done since March 2016. On his website: https://nathanshinkle.com he shows some of his most famed work. One of his most recognisable pieces is the Messi logo for his line of football boots and clothing. He goes in depth with the designs for each stage of the process and explains why certain elements are added and how they came to the overall logo.

This is the first part of the design, getting the basic structure for the design and establishing a base look for the whole piece. The website describes this first stage as: ‘This mark integrates three visual components into a single design. It incorporates the adidas Three Stripes. It takes on the simple silhouette of a traditional soccer crest. It can be read as an “M” for Messi.’

This is the second stage of development for the logo. These wing-like flairs were added to the logo to give it a bit of depth and personality compared to 3 stripes. They contribute to the overall shape and make it more 3D-like. The website states: ‘The mark needed to feel somewhat explosive, like Lionel Messi’s playing style. Serifs were extruded from the top left and top right to add outward movement to the logo.’

The third stage of the design is when things start to get more complex and intricate. Little details become enhanced and small serifs were added to balance the piece out. Small notches were added on the inside to give a better structure to the piece and make the M more obvious. On the website, it says: ‘Bottom serifs were added to counter-balance the top serifs. Interior notches were carved in to bring more clarity to the “M” read. Note that every angle plays off its corresponding angle. Nothing is arbitrary.’

This is the 4th and finalised piece. All the sharp angles around the exterior have been softened and the straight line have been curved to give the logo a better overall shape and some final touches. The website says: ‘The global identity team finalized my concept. They brought out the fluidity of Messi’s game by rounding the corners and smoothing any aggressive angles.’

I like Nathans style of work and how he comes to his final designs in stages. His style of work is very simple but gradually becomes more complex as the design progresses. He likes to work in symmetry and it works well in his outcomes.

Johnny O’Connor

John is an apparel graphic designer at Under Armour and has been responsible for multiple releases of clothing lines and designs that have been transferred onto clothing. Johnny’s working style mainly consists of abstract ideas turning into solid outcomes and then them ideas being continuously used throughout a drop of clothing.

A good example of this is a collaboration between Under Armour and Tuff Crowd where Johnny made the branding for the collab. The design he came up with is very simple but is also very effective and incorporates Tuff Crowd’s brand very well.

This branding represents both the sleekness of Under Armour and the messy and ruthlessness of Tuff Crowd. I think this branding is very simple yet extremely effective and conveys exactly what its trying to achieve. It has an initial hostility to the piece as the red could represent both graffiti and blood. The consumer would be at first taken aback to this design.

One of the drops from this collaboration really reflect Johnny’s abstract and obscure style by incorporating a strange pattern that works really well with the collaboration.

These pieces of merchandise really reflect the sleek and cleanliness of Under Armour as a brand compared to the messiness and ruthlessness of Tuff Crowd and they work well together on these pieces. It shows a range of diversity and how 2 completely different brands can come together to make abstract yet successful clothing lines.

Nicholas Chaun

Chaun is a freelance designer and illustrator who is based on behance and does sports design. He has a very unique style which can be very easily seen throughout his work and it can have amazing outcomes. He likes working with polygons and shapes to create positive effect with his pieces and he likes to include more than one focal point in his pieces. One thing i really like about Nicholas Chaun’s work is how vibrant it is and how eye-catching his pieces are. There is always extreme amounts of small details in his work which i find to be important with his pieces but it gives them so much more depth and makes u want to find so much more within the piece.

This is one of my favourite pieces of Chauns work as it really reflects his working style and how effective it can be. The polygonal shapes that consist through the piece make the piece pop out at you and give it incredible depth that makes it so much better. Also, the grainy texture gives the piece a sense of completeness and rounds it off very nicely. Also, the subtle Champions League pattern behind the players is another example of Chauns style and how effective it can be with pieces like this.

Graphics

This is my first piece which I think could have turned out better if i spent more time on it. This piece is Bruno Fernandes’ kit and number, nut instead of his name it says inspired. I did this as in his first year in the Premier League, he broke a yearly record with the most PL player of the month awards and also he has had an incredible impact on Manchester United as a whole in recent times. The piece generally could have been better and has small flaws but overall I’m fairly happy with how this one turned out. If i could change anything about this piece i would do some POS ideas for it as a marketing scheme for a top like this to be sold for the public. But i decided against it as i didn’t want to focus a lot of my time into one singular design. I feel like it would have turned out great and i would have been very happy with the results but it would be extremely time consuming and there would be a lot of intricacies involved and problems i would have to overcome. If i had more time i would have incorporated this with a marketing and merchandise idea and would have liked to focus on this.

I rushed this piece and there are some minor faults with it. For example the background smoke is a bit pixelated due to transferring it between programs and I’m not a big fan of the font i used but in couldn’t find a font that fitted the design well. I had a good idea withy this piece but couldn’t execute it in the way i wanted too. If I spent more time on this piece it could have had potential but i chose to move on to different designs. I wanted to somehow incorporate Wayne Rooney into this piece as he had the iconic number 10 shirt that Rashford now wears and Rooney being one of Rashfords main idols and also playing along side him for a few years, it would have worked very well as a whole piece. However I tried a few different concepts and none really seemed to work very well so decided to leave that concept behind.

I am very happy with how this piece turned out and it is one of my favorites thus far. I involved Marcus Rashford, Bruno Fernandes and Mason Greenwood as they are 3 of my favorite football players at the moment. I used the red chevron attached to the red rectangle on a black background as they are the colours most affiliated with Manchester United and they can also represent danger and ruthlessness which in turn represents these Man U players perfectly as they are 3 of the main goal scorers. It also give the piece a good base contrast and makes the players pop out at you. Behind these players I made a silhouette of Manchester Uniteds main character who is also featured on the main badge, known as the red devil. It is very easily recognizable and most football fans would be very quickly drawn to this as a main feature within this piece. I wanted to incorporate the red devil in the best way possible and had the idea of also naming the piece the red devils. I had a strong feeling towards naming this ‘The Red Devils’ as these 3 players can be seen as evil as they win the club games and rival clubs can often hate them or be annoyed when they see them score or just do well in general. Also Man United as a club can be referred too as the red devils so it has some meaning behind this feature. The text featured in this piece is also a big part of the design and i thought it would make it a bit clunky and worse. I am really happy with the font i used and feel like i could use this font again in the future. I am also happy with how much it pops out and the contrast it has on the rest of the darker colours used in the piece. Overall I’m very happy with the outcome of this piece and it is one of my favorites I’ve made.

With this piece i wanted to switch up the main point of focus from Manchester United players so i decided on Phil Foden. I wanted to represent his talent and potential in a very simple but effective way which is why i included a picture with him in an England shirt rather than a Man City kit. I included the lightning bolt at the back as i wanted to represent his agility and speed on the pitch as well as his electricity so i thought this was a perfect background. I also wanted to include some key words that stand out and are at the forefront of the piece. I made IMPACT the biggest word on the piece to reflect how much he can change with his talent both at the moment and in years to come. He has also had a big impact on the youths outlook into football and how connected young people can be in the big game. In the center of the piece i wanted to make it clear that this player is something special which is why i wanted to staple the phrase ‘Phil Foden Remember the Name’. My main goal was to represent how special and talented he is and the level he can reach if he stays at the level he’s at and continues to develop. Overall i am happy with my piece and feel like accomplished what i was trying to achieve.

Evaluation

In this project, i originally wanted to do both player specific sports designs as well as brand designs for merchandise and POS designs for products however i decided to focus more on the player specific designs.

I am quite happy with my outcomes however i wish i created higher quality pieces and more of them at that. My favourite piece is probably my Red Devils piece as i really like how clean it looks and how simple yet effective it is. Some of them were quite rushed and i wish i dedicated more time towards them however im not dissatisfied with the end products.

Improvements

My main improvement i would make in this project would have been my concentration and time management and dedication. Throughout this project, i couldnt focus on one thing and was always switching between ideas and due to this no outcomes ended up being created for quite a big chunk of time. Also, my time management during this project was a big flaw in my end products. I didn’t dedicate sufficient time to certain areas of the project and ended up with scattered outcomes and not an optimal ending to this final project.

Another improvement i would make is not exploring different types of designs and instead just sticking to the same layouts and ideas which in turn becomes repetitive and boring. If i had more time i would invest some time into exploration and trying out new things out of my comfort zone. However I am somewhat happy with the end results.

Netflix A-Z

I didn’t do much for this project because i didn’t have many ideas and by the deadline i hadn’t come up with anything so i just made a quick piece. I couldn’t think of any creative ways to envisage this project so i just threw together a few pieces.

This was the piece i did it was very simple and didn’t take very long.

I tried to include some of my favorites in this piece. I’m not very happy with the outcome and wish i had more time to work on this so i could have made a better piece and produced more work.

Soapbox

For the soapbox project, I decided to base mine around the importance of sports and how much it means to the youth yet how little access there actually is to the sports facilities.

As quite an active person I enjoy a large variety of sports, from badminton to football and tennis. Yet I don’t know one place that allows the public access to Badminton courts, even if they are paid. And I only know 3 places that host tennis with 2 being free and one being paid for. And regarding football, I know of a lot of outdoor places that have football goals in a range of quality, yet I only know one place that hosts indoor football. I believe these things should be readily available and easily accessed for the youth and for people that want to stay fit whilst enjoying their hobbies.

My survey

For my soapbox project, I made a survey for my fellow athletic friends to participate in and to see if their views matched those of my own.

My survey consisted of 5 questions each involving a different main topic and aspect to do with the accessibility to sports facilities and their opinion on how it can be changed. I tried to word the questions in a fair way so their views aren’t skewed towards the answer i would like. I tried to keep the whole survey unbiased and fair so that they can lay their views without feeling like they have to answer a certain way.

The first question: ‘How many public sports halls do you know of?’

To no surprise, everybody answered in the lower proportion of the available answers. If I were to answer this question i would put zero as I wouldn’t know where to go if I wanted to access a multiuse sports facility or a sports hall. I think this question in itself proves that there is a severe lack of available sports facilities that are easily and widely accessed by the public. I believe that a sports hall should be of easy access and readily available.

The second question: ‘Have you played Badminton? ‘

The aim of this question was to first see if anyone hadn’t actually played the sport and if so if it was just in school or whether they had actively played outside of school. I enjoy badminton when I play it and would like to find somewhere local to play it with my friends who also would like to play it more regularly. I have discussed finding a sports hall online so that we can play badminton as well as other sports together, but to no avail as I have researched and there are no accessible places that I could find on the internet. I believe that something as simple as a place to play badminton shouldn’t be a difficult thing to find and should be something that an average person can easily go to and enjoy themselves.

Question 3: ‘Where is your nearest tennis court?’

These last questions were written based answers but all seem to follow trends. This question was mainly set to achieve testing peoples knowledge and making them think about if they actually know the location of a tennis courts if they wanted to go out and play tennis. Personally i know 4 places where tennis hosted, with 2 being free and open to the public and the other 2 being membership based and obviously better quality. The main answer i got to this question was the tennis courts on Victoria park which i expected as it is quite a widely known place for people that live nearby. I got one answer where the participant didn’t know which I don’t think is a problem as tennis courts are quite readily available and I don’t think there is a problem with playing tennis as a sport for the general public. However I couldn’t name one place that hosts indoor tennis as the public courts can sometimes be overrun by the UK’s notorious bad weather and we still want to play but find it difficult too in the conditions. I m not complaining about the publics accessibility to the sport as is more than available but it would be nice to have somewhere indoors to go to play this sport.

Question 4: ‘If you want to go and sign up for a basketball team, where would you go?’

With this question, I was wondering if anyone would actually know a place that hosts basketball and matches of basketball or where a team is based. I assume if I really wanted to sign up for a basketball team it wouldn’t be extremely difficult as the internet probably could tell me but i know that signing up for a football team is a lot more accessible and I don’t think that is the case. Obviously in this country football is by far the biggest sport and there is far less desire for basketball than there is football. But regardless I couldn’t name one place that hosts basketball or games. I know of outdoor rundown courts but they are never used and aren’t very high quality. The answers to this question follow the trend of lack of this knowledge that should generally be common knowledge.

Question 5: ‘Do you think there should be more access to sports facilities? E.g access to stuff like badminton, tennis, indoor football etc. If so, what would you like to see introduced?’

This question was simply just trying to achieve an overall consensus and too get a genuine answer to the main implications of the previous questions answers. In my opinion there should be more access to indoor sports and the little accessibility shouldn’t be a problem in todays day and age. The answers to this question heavily agreed with me all participants saying they would like to see more sports halls and indoor multiuse spaces.

Benefits on exercise in youth development

Sports from a young age can have many positive effects on a child body and health, both mentally and physically. It can help them develop key life skills and purpose.

Developmental benefits:

Sports can help a child development mentally as it can teach them the feeling of a loss and how to cope with losing. Children can generally have a mindset of what they want they get but that’s not always the case in sports. This can stay with them for life and can help them in the toughest of times. With being a good loser comes maturity and practice. It can teach them to cope with disappointment and bad situations and can help with developing resilience. Sports can help a child deal with emotions and can help them escape with the stresses of everyday life. It can help them cope with negative feelings by distracting their entire mind and focusing them on the game. With sports also comes patience development and they can learn that sometimes you wait for the things that can feel the best.

Emotional benefits:

Playing in a team can give a child a sense of want and belonging as a child so that they don’t feel like they’re lost and doing things on their own. Sports is proven to simulate chemicals that make you feel better and happy so regular sports can help a child with their overall emotional wellbeing. It can also heavily boost a childs self-esteem and make them feel like they have done well. A lot of the time, sports comes with compliments, as simple as your coach, teammate or parent saying that you did something well or played a good game. This can really boost a childs happiness and confidence for a long time and make them want to perform well again which acts as a form of motivation.

Social benefits:

Sports can teach a child social lessons that they will need and keep for life. Playing sports in a team can teach them to communicate successfully and effectively. Little words and phrases between people that lead to a successful outcome can boost confidence and teach a child how important simple talking can be. Team sports can teach a child to cooperate and let others be in the limelight and succeed. It can teach them to be selfless and to simply listen to others. Sports can also help children build social circles outside of their school and develop new friend groups. Playing team sports means a child is expected to follow rules, accept decisions whether they think its right or wrong, and understand their are consequences for bad behaviour. It can help them to understand how to follow orders and take directions.

Sports can have seeming small short term effects but large and positive long term effects. It can help with child obesity or simply just taking a childs mind of stressful things. Yet there is little access to lots of sports and something needs to be done about this issue.

T-shirt

In the infamous BLM protests, many of the people there either held signs or wore simple black t-shirts with a simple message on. These are very effective, the white on black contrast grabs everybody’s attention and then they read the message. So i made a t-shirt based on my project.

Retro Book Cover

What makes a successful book cover?

Book cover has 5 jobs:

Announce its genre- identifies the genre for the audience so when searching for a book the customer knows what it is

Telegraph the tone- gives hints to what the book is about and what happens

Explain it’s scope- readers become aware about what’s in the book and what isn’t so the customers have this information.

Generate excitement- something that sill attract and hold a readers attention and make them want to know more. A hook that makes a promise and intrigues you.

Establish a market position- let customers know where your book fits in with the other similar books that they already are familiar with.

Book covers often fail

They are illegible- if it’s unreadable or too complex to simply make out what it is.

Disregard the genre- not making the genre of the book easy to understand and grasp

No hook- nothing to pull you in and intrigue the customer to them buy the book

Graphically or typographically incompetent- doesn’t look good and pushes customers away. Unprofessionally designed with a bad layout.

To make a successful book cover you have to try and achieve these 5 points and try to make it as graphically professional and pleasing without forgetting about the core points that make a book cover successful.

The book cover that i want to do is The Maze Runner as i like the books and films and it is one of my favorites.

This is the image i am basing my book cover off of, i am not going to do too much to it as i feel like it already looks quite retro and old but i am going to lower the quality a little bit and make it look less professional. I am going to use the pen tool, brush tool and the effects tab.

For this piece i used the brush tool too make the colours a bit blockier and and tried to make the light levels differ a bit more. I used the blur tool a little bit in the background to bring out the characters and the forefront a bit more. And i got a filter and put it over the image and set the opacity to 19%. This was the filter i used:

This makes it look worn and not very professionally made and kept.

A film in 5 images

For this one week project we have to create 5 images that describe a film. The film i chose to do is the new film that recently came out called ‘Tenet’. For this task i have to pick out the 5 most important parts of the film that accurately represent the story the film creates.

The first piece that i am doing is the opening scene which you are thrown straight into as a viewer. This scene can cause some confusion based o the rest of the film and the plot it follows. I decided todo this piece but change the colours to fit the general aesthetic of the scene. I tried to represent the shades as closely as possible but it doesn’t look very good without contrast. Here is my piece for this scene:

I tried to create some shadows and experimented with rough lines instead of smooth curves and it turned out decent but there is a few flaws.

My second piece is when they discovered the reverse ammunition. This is quite an important scene in the plot of the film so i feel like i had too:

I tried to include some of the details in the background but i didn’t try to make it too detailed because it would take too long to do all the details and it is only a small project so large amounts of detail aren’t required. This is one of my favourite scenes in the film because it more or less defines the plot of the film as we manage to discover reverse time and reverse ammunition.

This is the next scene that i remade from the film. This scene is quite important in the film as the main character and the villains wife get closer and become an alliance. This helps our character get to understand out villain better and start to understand what he uses to keep power.

I didnt quite finish this project but i liked how my results turned out. If i had more time to finish the last 2 images i would have kept the same style by making the colours really blocky yet keeping the images realistic and being able to tell the plot for the most part.

Year 2 typography

Firstly in this project we were working from inspiration from a typography artist named Ji Lee. He is well known for his smart and crafty typo work which is very simple but portrays the message very effectively.

This is an example of his work and you can very clearly see how simple his style of work is yet how well it works. So from this we were told to make our own versions of his work and so i tried and made a few of my own.

There are the examples i made and i believe some of them were succesful but some were a bit far fetched and didn’t really work how i intended them too. Te main one that wasn’t successful was the ‘Octopus” as i tried to make it work but it turned out far worse than i expected it too.

Then we had to get an inspirational quote and match it with a font from the internet that fits with the theme of the quote.

I like this quote because i feel like i somewhat live by this. I always make my own decisions and don’t ever fall into peer pressure or other peoples influence. And the reason why i chose this gothic dripping font is because when people don’t live their own lives and just live in peoples shadows their time and their own life is getting away from them and they cant stop it from dripping once it gets too far.

Year 2 Food Project

To start off the food project, we worked on deconstructed art. I analyzed some different foods and decided on a burger.

Then based on my research i decided to make my own.

I like this style of work but it only really fits with certain food types and if its done correctly. Its a hard style of work to achieve at a high standard because it can look very weird if the gaps are too big or if there is too much interaction between items. An example of this would be cheese and a burger patty and the cheese being stringy and attached to the burger due to the nature of cheese.

Then drew these chips in the same art style.

In this art style it is quite easy to make small details really effective and sometimes pop in the piece and that is what i attempted to do with the toppings of the chips. I don’t think i did this very well but would have found it easier if i was working on this piece digitally.

Then we worked on packaging and more specifically mosaics of packaging and making our own close ups of already existing packaging. At first i wanted to attempt the curiously cinnamon cereal packaging.

But then i realised how long it would take to get every little detail in the box so i decided to change to Skips because it has a simple design and i really like how this packaging is designed and just how big of an impact the small details make on the logo.

I think that my recreation of the packaging is quite good except for a few faults around the piece. Generally im quite happy with how this turned out and enjoy working in this style.

We then made our own lino prints based for this project I decided that i should make a hot dog as i felt like i had to do something similar to a burger but not a replica.

We worked in 2 layers with these prints. Firstly we removed all the background and then printed all of the piece in one colour. And then what we wanted to be a different colour we kept and then got rid of the rest.

I feel like my pieces had good potential but the turnout was a let down and i believe if i executed both the original drawing and the lino removal better then my piece could have been very good.

Life Drawing

Work

I was partially happy with the outcome of this piece as the scale is reasonable and i didn’t make too many mistakes. It could have been a lot better but it isn’t the worst piece of work that i have produced. I could have improved this piece by adding more detail and getting the scale in certain parts better instead of it turning out abnormal.

This is another piece of work that i have produced. I think that the scale on this one is very good but there are too many mistakes which overshadow this. I cold have improved this piece by adding more detail to the face and hair and improving the scale of the legs.

Evaluation

Overall i think that with my drawings, my best part and my most improved part is my scale of the body and i think that that has dramatically improved since the start of college. I think my worst part of my drawings is the mistakes and the curves. I believe this could be improved if focused on.

Edited piece

This is the edited version of my work. I inverted the colors of the collage and then using the hue/saturation sliders i go rid of the green paper behind the drawing. Then i used the brush tool and did a rough paint behind the drawing in red.

Artist research

Picasso was a very famous artist who took on many roles such as a painter, sculptor, poet and even a play-wright. He was Spanish but spent most of his adult life in France and was considered one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. Picasso had a very unique style which was using the drawing to create form and space rather than the color used. However, when he was doing life drawings his style completely changed. He hardly ever used colors and used shadows for depth in his drawings. He kept his life drawings simple but was very effective with his detail.

Da vinci was an Italian painter who studied and succeeded in various fields including invention, drawing, painting, sculpture, architecture, science, music, mathematics, engineering, literature, anatomy, geology and astronomy. Da vinci was the painter that made the classic Mona Lisa which his most famous piece and the most famous portrait in history. When producing his life drawing work, he liked to stick to one color and keep it relatively simple whilst highlighting every little detail he could see. Sometimes he even liked to create things he couldn’t physically see. Examples of this include a man doing a star jump but only his arms and legs move place, and the inside structure of a person.

Lost content

Brief Breakdown

What the project is about?

This project is about making things that don’t get lost and stay in availability for the rest of time and are accessible for future generations. People believe that pictures that are taken get lost in technology and social media.

What is 3D design?

3D design is designing something that utilises the third dimension. That means it has height, width and depth. In this project, we are designing a 3D time capsule.

What is Time Based Media?

Time based media is artwork that has duration as an applied dimension. This could include video or animation.

Who are your target audience?

Our target audience for this project is future generations as the time capsule will be discovered in the future and opened by those who discover it.

What outcomes do you need to produce?

Our outcomes for this project are a 3D time capsule and a piece of moving image which is held within the time capsule.

What is your Deadline/Timescale?

The deadline for this project is the 7th of February 2020.  That means that we have 5 weeks to complete this project.

What units are covered?

The units covered in this project are units 6 and 7.

What research is required? In this project, we need to research into artists that use these types of techniques. We also need to research into time capsules and what makes a convincing capsule. Also, we need to complete both primary and secondary research.

Mind Map

First Gif attempt

This is my first attempt at making a GIFF. This was made in photoshop using the timeline tool. The task was to make a simple animation of things that are within the topic of pop culture and everyday ordinary. With that topic i decided to to use three images that represent three topics that are fairly big in my life at the moment. Games, food and clothing. With that i went for the first things that came into mind whilst thinking out these topics. For food I went with pizza as it is my favourite food. For the game i went for, in my opinion, the most iconic game of the decade, Minecraft. And for clothing i went for a blooming brand which is starting to become more popular, in which being Alpha Industries.

Tweening

This is what i created with the use of the tweening technique on photoshop. Tweening is putting key frames and then letting the computer generate frames in between them frames to make it look as if it is a smooth animation. With this technique we can select how many frames get generated between the key frames. For this example of the ball bouncing, i made 3 key frames an generated 5 frames between the first and second keyframe, and the second and third keyframe. This technique saves time and is a good technique to know.

Stop Motion

This is our stop motion animation that I made with 2 of my peers, Jack H and Jamie U. We filmed this with a stop motion application on android. We created this by firstly drawing out the lyrics to the song and then taking pictures whilst slowly moving along the words. Then we put the final product into iMovie and overlaid the song on top of it. Due to the file type that we had to export it as, being .gif, the animation cuts off midway through the lyrics so the full thing doesn’t play. Also, the sound on it doesn’t play but its supposed to be Silence by Khalid and the lyrics are synced up with the lyrics from the chorus.

Acetate Stop Motion Animation

I created this animation by drawing multiple different stick figures that are doing different actions on the same piece of acetate and then switching which i took a picture on based on the action that the character is doing. For example, if the character is walking i would use the one with the bent leg to represent that the character is walking. This one is also cut short due to the file type as I changed the file type to a .gif. I like this style of animating as it allows a lot of freedom within the animation and anything can be used as the background and you can use anything during your animation.

Primary Research

Secondary Research

The first video I looked into was: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LGmwUDV5O44 and it was Marty Cooper doing an animation using a pen and drawing a little character skateboarding in different places and then using acetate when he jumps out. I found this very interesting as it is a unique style of animation and was quite inspiring to watch as it revealed the true potential of this type of animation.

Another video i watched was: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ncRxn0DKiY. This was a simple flip book but it was done very well. This video was very interesting to watch as the concept was very simple and the style is quite simple but when done right it is very good and looks very professional.

Music project

This was the album cover that i decided to take inspiration from. I liked this album cover as it is very clustered and unorganised which makes the cover complex and also quite original. It focuses the attention on the centre piece but then as your focus expands around the centre piece gets more complicated and there are more confusing parts to focus on. Also, in the different parts of the album cover, there are hints towards different songs on the track list. This could be to build hype around the tracks or to simply promote these certain tracks. This album cover has a similar style to the video game Cuphead which is well-known for using these over dramatic cartoon faces.

Cover artist

The artist that made this album cover was Stephen Gibb who is a veteran painter from the Windsor Star. He is most well-known for his surreal imagery and grinning characters which generally are quite creepy but attract attention. His work has been plaguing art galleries and spaces for years and in this piece he used some of his previous work as well. Also, Gibb included a self-portrait of himself in the bottom right of the piece.

Aspects of inspiration

The main aspects that inspire me on this piece are the smiley faces that are over dramatic and the personified objects like the grandfather clocks and the pyramid in the background.

Artist of inspiration

The artist who i decided to base my work around and shape my work is the artist that made the cover art that i’m taking inspiration off. This artist, as mentioned earlier, is Stephen Gibb. The reason why i am taking inspiration off of this artist is because i like the freaky nature of his work and i also like the randomness and sense of freedom i have whilst taking inspiration from this artists work.

This is an example of his work which i feel truly shows the freedom and randomness of his work as well as showing the reoccurring theme that is in his work.

Main points of inspiration

The main parts from the album cover that i want to keep or slight;y modify are the small planet that the main character is on and the idea of the sun and the moon.

Final Piece

This is the final piece that i decided on. I decided not to make this piece too clustered and thought that leaving some space would allow the piece to breathe a bit and have a bit of room in the background. When i created this piece i had a general idea of doing a theme of good and evil whilst also making international well-renowned landmarks around the world. These are geographically accurate with their location. The landmarks that i decided to do were the Big Ben and Mt Rushmore. I wanted to blow the size of the landmarks way out of proportion without making them too big and becoming center of attention. I think i did this well. With the good vs evil theme i tried to make it so the clock face that is facing towards the sun is really tired and its eyes are hurting because its constantly staring at the sun. This is the good side. The evil side has a broken minute hand and has red pupils and is facing towards the blood moon that is casting an evil shadow on the earth. This clock face also has blood dripping from its top lip.

One Lyric image

This was the piece that i made for our task which was to make an image based off of a single lyric. The lyric that i decided to represent was ‘Fly me to the moon and let me play among the stars’. When i decided on this lyric the first thing that i thought of was someone who was playing games with the stars as if the stars are his toys to use for his entertainment. This piece didn’t really turn out as planned as i wanted to create a more realistic person and the background was really low resolution as i couldn’t find a better one on the internet. I don’t really feel that the piece reflects the idea that i had in mind.

Thoughts

My final thought about the outcomes of this project:

I believe that i could have produced a better final piece and i chose an album cover to try and use for inspiration that was a bit out of my skill level and was a bit ambitious. I have realized that the pieces that i produce aren’t very realistic and are very cartoon-like. I feel like i had a good idea with my piece but couldn’t quite reproduce my ideas when doing my work. I believe that this project was a good challenge for me i have learnt a lot throughout the project. I think the main parts that i need to work on are making my pieces less cartoon-like, my time management and my work ethic.

Brief Breakdown

Unit one is about developing skills and being able to represent ideas visually in a range of art and design activities. By the end i should be able to successfully create visual images using the skills i have developed.

In unit two I should understand research tools, methods and skills. Understand primary and secondary research sources. In the end of unit until I should be able to use research tools, methods and skills to inform ideas for creative activist.

In unit three I should understand critical perspectives that influence the analysis of art and design activity and instantaneously the contexts within which art and design is positioned. And in the final unit I should understand the materials. Processes and technical skill used in art and design. In this project called “Vibrations of the soul” we will explore the boundaries between music and art and explain how they influenced us. We will be working outside of our comfort zone to test and challenge our creative ability and gain a greater understanding of the possibilities of a wide range of media within our specialist area.

By the end of the project I would have produces an album cover and how it was created. I would also have primary, secondary and contextual research into music. I should also have had an artist of my own that I have done research into and your opinion of their artwork, and if you would use it in your own work. I Have 5 to 6 weeks till the deadline on the 06/12/19.
